The Institute of Power Engineering with its seat in Warsaw is established as a Research and Development Unit, pursuant to Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 815/53 of 2 November 1953.
A local office – Gdańsk Division of the Institute of Power Engineering is established under the name „Automation Laboratory” at 2 Matejki Street.

The Division moves premises to its new office at 3/8 Chlebnicka Street. It is renamed as „Control Laboratory”, and then as „Control Laboratories”.
Team Leader: Włodzimierz Hellmann, Head of the Generator Control Laboratory: Zbigniew Szczerba, Head of the Electrostatic Precipitator and Transformer Control Laboratory: Czesław Morawski.
The Division moves premises to its new office at 130 Marynarki Polskiej Street. A plan is developed to build new premises on the land adjacent to the Gdańsk Electricity Utility and the planned Power Engineering School Complex.
The Division becomes a subordinate unit of the Institute of Power System Automation (IASE) in Wrocław. It becomes financially independent and gains new departments.
Division Director: Edward Mściwojewski, Heads of Departments: Andrzej Grabowski, Józef Kosiek, Tadeusz Kowalik and Czesław Morawski.
The Division returns to the structures of the Institute of Power Engineering and new departments are established: Departments of Nuclear Plant Operation, Nuclear Plant Control, Electrohydraulic Equipment for Power Plants, Microprocessor Devices and Prototype Construction.
The Division moves premises to a new building at 27 Mikołaja Reja Street; several new testing laboratories are set up.
The Quality Management System in place at the Gdańsk Division receives a certificate to confirm its compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001.
The Institute of Power Engineering is transformed into a Research Institute (as of 1 October 2010), pursuant to the Act of 30 April 2010 on research institutes (Journal of Laws of 2010 No 96, item 618).
The RTDS Research Laboratory is established in the Division, equipped in a Real Time Digital Simulator manufactured by RTDS Technologies in Canada. The device is based on a multi-core Novacor system and offers a number of peripherals for the testing of power electronic devices, power system automation and PMU/WAMS systems, amongst others.
The Environmental Management System in place at the Gdańsk Division receives a certificate to confirm its compliance with the requirements of ISO 14001.
